Digital Repositories Infrastructure Vision for European Research (DRIVER-II)

Project Id
RI-212147
Abstract
DRIVER is a multi-phase effort whose vision and primary objective is to establish a cohesive, pan-European infrastructure of Digital Repositories, offering sophisticated functionality services to both researchers and the general public. Based on the establishment of a co-ordinated network of Digital Repositories, containing (textual) research and other scholarly publications, and on the development of an advanced-quality test-bed infrastructure, DRIVER will enable enhanced interoperability of data and service-providers while providing the required functionalities to the end users. Through its awareness and advocacy programme, it will foster the development of digital repositories in all European countries. With a number of studies on the current state of the Digital Repository landscape, it will also identify the most prseeing issues for future developments.

Description

Objectives of the project
The initial phase of the DRIVER project was proposed to last 18 months and funded under the EU Sixth Framework Programme, Research Networking Testbeds. The DRIVER partnership involves 10 European partners. The initial phase of the DRIVER project concentrates on providing access to textual scientific output, such as articles, scientific/technical reports, preprints and working papers from countries in the DRIVER testbed: Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. DRIVER endeavours to expand on this to include a wider range of materials from all EU countries.

The development of DRIVER proceeds in discrete phases. Phase-I is of an exploratory/test-bed nature. By the end of the project, the following will have been accomplished:

* Development of an advanced-quality test-bed infrastructure, which will be based on a distributed service-oriented architecture enabling enhanced interoperability of data and service-providers offering fundamental generic functionality on those servers
* Establishment of a co-ordinated network of Digital Repositories, containing (textual) research and other scholarly publications from individual institutions or national institution clusters in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK. These will interoperate and become available through the DRIVER test-bed infrastructure mentioned above
* Establishment of an awareness and advocacy programme fostering the development of Digital Repositories in all European countries
* Studies on the current state of the Digital Repository landscape and identifying the most pressing issues for future developments
