European Grid Initiative Design Study (EGI_DS)

Project Id
RI-211693
Abstract
The goal of EGI_DS is to establish long-term sustainability of grid infrastructures in Europe. Europe has invested heavily in e-science programmes over the past years both at the National and the European levels. Grid technology is recognized as a fundamental component for e-Infrastructures and e-Science. Many countries have lauched National Grid Initiatives (NGIs) to establish national grid infrastructures.

These NGIs have recognised the need to link exixting national grid infrastructures and to support the setup and initiation of new grid initiatives. All these efforts are consolodates under the European Grid Initiative (EGI). Driven by the needs and requirements of the European research community, the EGI Design Study (EGI_DS) is a project for the conceptual setup and operation of a new organisational model of a sustainable pan-European grid infrastructure. As part of the 7th Research Framework Programme, the EGI_DS project is interacting with and encouraging the member states to make the strategic decisions required to establish and support a sustainable grid infrastructure and initiate its implementation.

Description

Objectives of the project
The objective of EGI_DS is to establish long term sustainability of grid infrastructure in Europe. This will be achieved by establishing a new federated model bringing together NGIs to build the EGI Organisation. The future EGI organisation will be capable of fulfilling the vision of a sustainable European grid infrastructure for research. The main objective of the project id to study the appropriate requirements, design the functionality & model, and to implement a prototype structure of EGI organisation for research, which will take up the coordination and operation of the pan-European Grid infrastructure.
