- Abstract
- In the mature European e-Infrastructure (GEANT and distributed computing infrastructure) three main initiatives are relevant for the South-East European region: SEE e-Infrastructure initiatives are committed to ensuring equal participation of the less-resourced countries of the region in European trends; SEEREN initiative has established a regional network and its GEANT connection and the SEE-GRID initiative the regional Grid. SEE-GRID-SCI will leverage the SEE e-Infrastructure to enable new scientific collaborations among user communities. Actually SEE-GRID-SCI (ESS-GRID e-Infrastructure uptake by new user groups extending over the region, fostering collaboration and providing advanced capabilities to more researchers, with an emphasis on strategic groups in seismology, meteorology and environmental protection. The initiative thus aims to have a catalytic and structuring effect on target new user communities. In parallel, it will enlarge the regional e-Infrastructure to cater for demands by increasing the computing and storage resources and involving new partner countries region. Finally in longer term, SEE-GRID-SCI is promoting the sustainability of the National development of South-East EUrope, by easing the digital divide and stimulating e-Infrastructure development and adoption by new user communities, thus enabling collaborative high-quality research across target scientific fields.

Description
- Objectives of the project
- The core objective of SEE-GRID-SCI is to involve three strategic international scientific communities / Virtual Organisations (seismology, meteorology, environmental protection) and thus, further stimulate the use and expansion of the existing regional e-Infrastructure and its services; capitalize on the existing human network to further strengthen scientific collaboration and cooperation among participating SEE communities in the area of e-infrastructures. These aims together with a set of coordinated actions designed for strengthening the national Grid Infrastructures, will ensure the countries involves to join the long-term, sustainable European Initiatives as a full fledged peer.
- Project description
- ACTION PLAN:
Overall, the project is composed of four Networking Activities, one Service ACtivity, and one Joint Research Activity.
Networking activities:
NA1 - project administrative and technical management - is crucial to the success of the project, in terms of lightweight and efficient management. NA2 - National Grid Initiatives (NGI) support and international collaboration - will focus on supporting the NGIs of the countries in the region, focusing on the non-EGEE countries of the Western Balkans, moldova, Georgia and Armenia. Guidelines for NGI best-practices will be defines, and a set of coherent actions will be carried out to enhance NGIs maturity levels for the integration in wider European Grid. The other line of action is the dissemination of the NGI know-how to other peripheral regions, and establishing strong collaboration channels with other regional Grid initiatives as well as with pan-European initiatives. NA3 - Dissemination and training - will focus on outreach, both to the wider public as well as specific Grid operator and new user communities, and targeted training events. NA4 - User communities support - will provide round-the-clock user support for a range of applications from three target fields. As a baseline for this work, the applications from three core user communities will be assessed in terms of Grid requirements. Dedicated support teams will be created for the regional applications: pre-deployment gridification support will be provided, as well as run-time production-level user support.
Services activities:
SA1 - Infrastructure operations - will ensure that user community needs in terms of size and availability of computing, storage, networking, and application-specific resources are catered for. The operations activity will adopt the pragmatic model of the two layered infrastructures in which mature sites will be moved to EGEE production infrastructure while the start-up sites from new institutes and user communities will be incubated within the SEE-GRID infrastructure. In this way, applications will be able to benefit from the computing resources of both infrastructures, by mainly using firstly the pilot infrastructure to product subsequently a new infrastructure. New mature VOs will be deployed over the e-Infrastructure and supported by SA1 and sophisticated operational tools from JAR1 will be used to enhance infrastructure performance.
Joint Research activities:
JRA1 - Development of application-level services and operational tools - has two distinct as aspects. Firstly, starting from the specific Grid requirement of the three user communities applications, it will conduct an analysis focused on capturing commonalities and identifying areas where middleware / application-ware development is needed. The specific developments will be caried out, in order to cater for efficient application deployment, and will be deployed in production. Secondly, this activity will aim at improving the existing operational tools in order to enhance the infrastructure preformance and automation (focussing on application-related customisations:development and deployment of monitoring / alarm / accounting tools with an application-centric view).
