India-Europe cooperation to promote IPv6 adoption (6CHOICE)

Abstract

The EU and India Summit 2006 defined research in ICT technologies as a priority sector for co-operation between Indian and European Researchers. The 6CHOICE project supports the close co-operation between the Indian Educational and Research Network (ERNET) and Europe's GEANT as well as between the Indian Grid project (GARUDA) and its European counter-part EGEE. In both of these the 6CHOICE project supports such co-operation through network interconnection and joint service planning - with a strong IPv6 focus. Experiments with the middlware developed jointly in the project team will be facilitated in universities and reserach institutes linked to ERNET or to GEANT - which are themselves interconnected. This will be complemented with workshops to different level of target audience as well as with training events.

Objectives of the project

The 6CHOICE project will strengthen co-operation between the research communities in India and Europe dealing with research networks (ERNET/GEANT), Grid connectivity and services. The focus is especially on the promotion of the Next Generation Internet Protocol: IPv6. The IPv6 technology is ready for deployment, and Inda has been targeted as being one of the first countries with the potential of adopting political directives to implement his new protocol nationwide. 6CHOICE will promote the use of this technology across Europe and India as a fundamental part of their research infrastructures.

Project description

ACTION PLAN:
6CHOICE will establish a close co-operation between key organisations involved with ERNET (India) and GEANT (Europe), as well as between the Indian Grid project (GARUDA) and its European counterpart (EGEE). The co-operation will be developed using different channels such as conferences, seminars, studies and analyses, giving support to working groups and expert groups, operational support and dissemination, information and communication activities, and a combination of these, as appropriate in each case. Workshops will support such co-operation through ERNET-GEANT interconnection, joint service planning and joints experiments. Technical solutions will also be developed and tested experimentally between Indian and EUropean universities and research institutes using the interconnected ERNET and GEANT.
